Children

  • 19.8 million children below age 6 in India are undernourished (ICDS 2015)
  • 38% (1 in 3) of children between 0-5 years are stunted in the country (NFHS 4, 2015 – 2016)
  • 36% of children under 5 years of age are underweight in India (NFHS, 2015 – 2016)
  • 58% of children between 6 months – 5 years were found to be anemic in the country (NFHS, 2015 – 2016)

  • Only 21% of mothers (1 in 5) recieved full antenatal care in the country (NFHS 4, 2015 – 2016)
  • More than 50% of the pregnant women aged 15 – 49 years were found to be anemic (NFHS 4, 2015 – 2016)

Education

  • Difference in literacy rate is huge around 17% between men (81.5) and women (64.6).
  • There are currently 186 million females in India who cannot even read and write a single sentence in any language.
  • The average annual dropout rate for secondary schools in India is about 17.06 percent.
  • Major reasons for dropouts were: need to supplement income through household chores / domestic work and work to earn money.
  • School related expenses were deterrents (direct cost appear to be a greater problem for dropouts).

Gender Issues

  • 42% of married women in India were married as children (District Information System for Education (DISE) 3)
  • 1 in every 3 child brides in the world is a girl in India (UNICEF).
  • India has more than 45 lacs girls under 15 years of age who are married with children. Out of these, 70% of the girls have 2 children (Census 2011)
  • Lifetime physical and/ or sexual intimate partner violence: 28.8%
  • Kidnapping & Abduction-49%
  • Rape- 18%
  • Assault or insult to modesty of girl child- 11%
  • Procuration of girls- 2%
