Healthcare
India had started thinking in the field of healthcare before independence by talking about primary healthcare and its implication. After that many historical events and policies like Alma Ata declaration, Health and Population policies are developed to address the health need of every individual of the society. But after so many years of policy implementation still the data from NFHS, DLHS, SRS and AHS clearly indicates that access to healthcare still remains a challenge for the most needed poor population of the country.
While the health statistics of rural India started showing improvements in the health indicators of rural population, the health status and access to basic healthcare for the poor in urban slum dwellers have not changed much. Despite accounting for 1/4th of the country’s poor population, urban areas have less than 4% of government primary health care facilities.
Urban slum dwellers suffer from adverse health conditions due to many reasons like lack of education/awareness regarding the disease and where and whom to approach when sick , unaffordable and inaccessible healthcare facilities, unwillingness to lose a day’s wage in order to reach the nearest health facility. Health for underprivileged, which is a desperate need, thus remains unaddressed.
As a result, cases of poor women health, malnourishment in children and deaths from preventable diseases like Diarrhea, respiratory infection and other communicable disease from such areas are always very high.
Thus the need of the hour is to bring quality health care services to the doorsteps of the needy if they are not able access the existing health facility and to promote health awareness/education and a positive health care seeking behavior among the underprivileged.
In such a scenario a doorstep health care services delivery system is the most practical mechanism. And in subscription to this view, Remedial Foundation has initiated the Health camp and screening programs.
This is a unique programme that seeks to address problems of accessibility and availability of primary health care with a special focus on children and women, in urban slums and remote rural areas.
Basic Education & Vocational Training
Education is the only means for better life because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood and increases one’s awareness on their rights, and in the process evolve as a better citizen. Unfortunately India is among those with the lowest proportion of trained youth in the world. Literacy rate is not satisfactory and have wide variation across the country. The Vocational Education and Training system in other developing countries in contrast, shows a much higher proportion of youth participation, more intense involvement of the private sector and is anchored in the law. With so much diversity and different demographic pattern in the country there is dire requirement of schools and vocational training centers for the vulnerable population of the society who cannot attend regular schools due to their different financial and social reasons.
Remedial Foundation works for education of vulnerable children who are under difficult circumstances, such as child labor, children of poorest of the parents, street and runaway children, children with rare disabilities, disaster struck children and slum children. Special emphasis is given on girl education and women vocational training , so that they get empowered, able to earn their basic livelihood and able to stand independently in their difficult circumstances.
